History of Key Club

The first ever Key Club was founded in Sacramento, California in 1925. The club, of only 11 people, was started by two Kiwanis Club members, Albert C. Olney and Frank C. Vincent. They wanted to extended Kiwanis mission into high schools. The original club was comprised of a schools "key boys" (a.k.a. exceptional students) who were wanting to serve their school in any way possible and create school spirit. The club was named "Key Club" after it's members. Key Club only grew after that. In 1939, the Florida association forms, becoming the first ever district, in 1943, we elected our first president, Malcolm Lewis, and in December of 1946 the first ever Key Club week was celebrated. But we didn't stop there, in 1967, the first ever club outside of North America is found in Nassau, Bahamas, in 1977, the first female students are admitted into key club, two years later in 1979, the first three female district governors are elected. In 1991, the first female president is elected, in 1998, Key had raised over one million dollars for UNICEF, and in 2008 we had raised again over one million dollars to help fight HIV/AIDS is Swaziland. Today Key Club is the oldest and largest service programs for high schoolers (source: keyclub.org)
